Can I Attend Without Teaching? YES! You're welcome to attend Sharon Skill Swap as a participant even if you're not teaching a workshop - while instructor registration is now closed, we encourage you to consider sharing your skills at future events to enrich our community's learning experience.
Can I take classes only in the afternoon or just in the morning? Yes! Come anytime during the day (but you will have to wait for the next session of the class). Anyone who takes at least one class/workshop will be entered in the raffle. Raffle prizes include gift cards to local shops and restaurants, maple syrup, soaps, etc. You have to be present at the end of the day to win a prize!
What about children? Can I come with my family? Even though we don't provide childcare, some classes are geared towards anyone who is willing to learn. There are two classes for kids ('learn to make cool duplo boats' by Robin Servoz) scheduled. You are welcome to bring your children, but if you do, they remain solely your responsibility. If you are under 13, you must attend Sharon Skill Swap with a parent or guardian. Classes will be labeled clearly if they are only for adults ("Table Saw Circle Cutting Jig" by Scott Henkels for example might not be the best fit!)
What classes/workshops will be offered, and do I need to bring anything? You can see a whole list of all classes at https://www.sharonconnects.org/event-overview.html You don't have to bring anything, but some classes might be easier or more interesting if you do.
How do we register for classes? 1) Come the day of the event starting at 9 am. From 9 - 9:45, people will be able to register for all the classes. Some will fill up fast, so come early!! 2) You see a class you really really like, email us at [email protected] and we will TRY (but doubtful we will be successful) to save a spot for that class. But just so you are aware, we will not email participants in case the class is canceled. Life happens, and we want to give as much flexibility as possible to our instructors. There will be other terrific classes to choose from. Because of this flexibility, we cannot tell you at this time when the class will be running during the day or where!
What happens if the classes fill up? We see that as a giant success on our part - the community came out! But that can be disappointing, and we understand that. We will have a way for you to connect with instructors, and a few spots for 'watching' the class but not fully participate. Bring snowshoes and skates, the ice rink is open all day, and there are some nice tracks in the woods for a walk. There might be other classes you thought might not interest you - give it a try!
We will also have coffee and donuts going all day in the gym - Come and sit, read a book, talk to your neighbors!
FAQs for instructors/leading a workshop or a class What Can I Offer?
There are no strict guidelines for workshop themes. Consider what you're knowledgeable about or interested in learning. Here are some initial ideas to inspire you: repairing something, constructing something, cultivating something, crafting something, or showcasing a talent or skill! You don't need to be an expert to lead a workshop. The most successful workshops are led by individuals who genuinely have a passion for the skills they're sharing. If there's something that excites you, piques your curiosity, brings you satisfaction, or ignites your enthusiasm, and you have enough knowledge to impart some skills, you're well-equipped to lead a workshop on that topic.
Is it Limited to Sharon Residents?
NO, it's not limited to Sharon residents. People from neighboring towns are welcome to attend or teach.
What if I Can't Decide on a Workshop Topic?
If you're considering leading a workshop but can't settle on a topic, remember that teaching isn't mandatory to participate in the Sharon Skill Swap. However, if you're inclined to lead a workshop and need inspiration, try asking friends for input on what they'd like to learn from you. Sometimes, our unique skills are right in front of us, waiting to be recognized.
How Do I Organize a Workshop?
We offer resources to assist you with that! Start by considering the questions and tips mentioned earlier. If you require guidance, feel free to reach out to us at [email protected], and we'll connect you with someone who can help you through the planning process.
Can I Propose Multiple Workshops?
Certainly! You're encouraged to propose as many workshops as you'd like. However, we generally limit each person to 1-2 workshops during the day to ensure everyone interested in teaching has an opportunity to do so.
